1.
Maintain knowledge about literature
and reading:
Initially we
researched books that were about promoting literacy, literature and reading and
provided the search strategies on how they were located; skills vital to
helping inform customers. We covered the importance of recognising that
different customers will have different reading levels and genre tastes and the
importance of being able to inform and help in many areas of reading. We were
required to deliver an individual blog throughout the year posting about
reading, literature and promotion issues as well as seek out literary reviews
through various media types including TV, radio and even other classmates
“reading review finds” were posted on our group Facebook page to share the review
found. An understanding and recognition of the Dewey Decimal Classification
System ensures I can locate literary works or information within a public
library or a school library setting. The ability to keep up to date on a broad
range of literary works with the use of websites that offer many genre options,
new publications, how books can be translated into film and television series
and following emerging formats such as eBooks. Information on reading trends
and literature were shared by all using our blogs and posting URL websites to
our Facebook group; this collaborative approach helped us to be informed and
remain current for our customers and updated my own knowledge as well. The aspects
of this unit were covered very well and I feel I have an improved ability to
locate, evaluate and source information to promote literacy, literature and
reading for my customers and for my own knowledge into the future.
2.
Implement a range of strategies to
promote literature and reading:
We looked
into how different organisations arrange their collections such as bookshops
who often present mostly by genre, public library fiction is by author but an
academic library would have quite an in-depth organisation system. We developed
many ways that promote literature and reading including posters, themed book
displays, competitions and PowerPoint presentation. Our two week work placement
assignment was to do a project that promoted reading and literature in some
way. Role plays and scenarios using interview techniques and provide advice to
meet reading needs along with being able to source information that met a
customer’s literature request are subjects that have all been covered. We
looked into strategies that libraries and organisations use to promote reading
and assessed the success levels. Libraries use displays, tie-ins to current
movie screenings or television shows, special events throughout the year like
the Writers Festival all in an effort to promote reading and encourage it. I
have had the occasion to pass on a recommendation/request by a customer of a
current publication that she recommended for her mother but was required in
talking book format for her. This information was given to the librarian and this
item is now on request.
3.
Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of
strategies to promote literature and reading.
The unit
covered aspects on monitoring and evaluating how effective strategies are
within library environments when promoting literature and reading. This can be
done with the use of feedback forms, the library management systems statistics
and reservations placed after promotions just to name a few. All the monitoring
options help staff to track the feedback and then provide resources most
effectively to serve their clientele. The feedback responses assist libraries
to make changes to their strategies; this knowledge tells them which promotions
are the most effective in encouraging reading and literature and dictates the
best way for any future projects to cater specifically to their community.
An enjoyable unit over all I’ve
discovered a wealth of useful places to visit to be informed, stay informed and
ways to contribute to others being informed. I have discovered a delightful
array of book sites, display possibilities, blogs and review options all which
help with information, thoughts on books and reading that improve my potential
to help and create interest in others with a broad variety of reading and
literature needs. It is important to remember that professional development and
remaining current is a lifelong requirement, to help others you need to be
continually seeking out the new and welcoming changes the future will surely bring.
